Lucy Turnbull, First Lady of Australia since Sept 15, 2015 (wife of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull)

Lucinda Mary “Lucy” Turnbull AO (née Hughes; born 30 March 1958) is an Australian businesswoman, philanthropist, and former local government politician. She served as the Lord Mayor of Sydney from 2003 to 2004 (the first woman to hold the position), having first been elected to the Sydney City Council in 1999. Since leaving office, Turnbull has served in city planning roles, as a company director, and as a board member of various non-profit organisations. Her husband, Malcolm Turnbull, is the Prime Minister of Australia.

Born Lucinda Mary Hughes, Turnbull is the daughter of Tom Hughes, a former Attorney-General of Australia. Her great-grandfather was Sir Thomas Hughes, the first Lord Mayor of Sydney. She was educated at the Frensham School in Mittagong, New South Wales and the University of Sydney, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (in 1982). Turnbull also holds a Master of Business Administration from the Australian Graduate School of Management of the University of New South Wales.

While working for her father, aged 19, Turnbull met Malcolm Turnbull, who was aged 23. They were married on 22 March 1980[9][10] in Cumnor, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom by a Church of England priest, despite Malcolm then being Presbyterian and Lucy Roman Catholic. After two miscarriages, Lucy and Malcolm Turnbull have two children, Alex (b. 1982) and Daisy (b. 1985). Malcolm Turnbull has been a member of the House of Representatives for Wentworth since 2004, representing the Liberal Party. He has had two stints as the party’s leader, and in that capacity is the current Prime Minister of Australia.

The couple reside in Sydney, with an additional property in Hunter Valley, an apartment in Canberra when they are not in The Lodge. They also own an apartment in New York City.

Thérèse Rein, Former First Lady of Australia (wife of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd)

Born in 1958, Thérèse Rein is a trained psychologist. She grew up in Adelaide and then attended the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters Qualifying (psychology).

As a psychologist, her specialisation is in the field of clinical depression. She is also a trained rehabilitation counsellor, assisting those affected by injury to find new careers and gain employment.

She met her husband, the Hon Kevin Rudd, when they were both students at ANU. In November 2009 they celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary.

They have three children: Jessica; Nicholas and Marcus.

Ms Rein accompanied Kevin on various postings when he was a diplomat to Australian Embassies in Stockholm and Beijing. During this time she worked and studied.

Ms Rein is also an entrepreneur who, in 1989, founded a business which started by assisting people with disabilities return to or enter the workforce.

Her company now only delivers services outside Australia assisting highly disadvantaged people to fully participate in the workforce.

Her professional success has led her to promote greater self-employment and entrepreneurship amongst women.

Ms Rein has a passion for the arts and is particularly interested in East Asian fine arts, indigenous Australian contemporary art, dance, music and gardens.

As a member of the Honorary Board of the International Paralympic Committee, Ms Rein lends active support to the paralympic movement in Australia.

She is Children’s Champion of the National Association for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect
